MANILA, Philippines – The weather bureau announced the start of the southwest monsoon or habagat season in the country on Friday, May 30, signaling that the onset of the rainy season is also expected to be declared soon.

“Recent weather analysis over the past several days has shown the persistence of low-level southwesterly winds over the western section of Luzon and the frontal system over extreme Northern Luzon,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) explained in a statement.

PAGASA added that the easterlies, or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, have also weakened.

The public should expect occasional to frequent rain and thunderstorms “as the habagat becomes more dominant…particularly over the western sections of the country.”

Given that, the rainfall criteria for declaring the beginning of the rainy season are likely to be met in the next two weeks, according to PAGASA.

The rainy season usually begins in the second half of May or first half of June, and lasts until November.

But even during the rainy season, there will be periods with very little or no rain, called monsoon breaks.

The Philippines has yet to have its first tropical cyclone for 2025. For the next six months, or from June to November, PAGASA estimated that 11 to 19 tropical cyclones may form within or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility. – Rappler.com
