Palaro 2025 features solar-powered cauldron in Ilocos Norte

ILOCOS NORTE, Philippines – The cauldron in sports is traditionally lit through a torch with a fire, marking the start of the games. But in Palarong Pambansa 2025, the approach has shifted, using a sustainable light beam to minimize carbon emissions.

Located at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, the Palaro Light Beam features solar panels, LED video panels, and metal, arranged in a flame-like form inspired by the Paoay Sand Dunes’ tumbleweed, with headlights at the bottom.

In the morning, the solar panels harvest energy from the sunlight, while the headlights facing the sky radiate light, and the LED video panels showcase Palaro graphics and videos at night.

The light beam will be officially lit through a battery-powered torch, carried by Ilokano champions and emerging athletes during the ceremonial lighting. The torch was installed at the light beam for it to illuminate, and will be lit every night throughout the games.

The Palaro Light Beam was made by Ilokano designers led by Aian Raquel, together with Stewart Magayano and Allan Sonajo.

According to Raquel, also the art and creative director of Palaro 2025 and Ilocos Norte tourism officer, who calls the light beam a “reverse cauldron,” the design follows the province’s brand as the renewable energy capital of Southeast Asia.

“The creative direction is leaning more toward a green [Palaro]. We thought of doing something that’s… greener [than the previous editions],” Raquel said.

Ilocos Norte is home to several notable wind farms, including the largest wind farm in the Philippines, located in Burgos, the first-ever wind farm in Southeast Asia in Bangui, and another in Pagudpud. These have inspired the sustainable design of the Palaro Light Beam.

With the theme “Nagkakaisang Kapuluan” (United Archipelago), Ilocos Norte is hosting the 65th edition of the national premier sporting event for elementary and high school students from May 24 to 31. – Rappler.com
