Amid the picture-perfect murals of Makati, there’s a new art installation series that seems more rugged than the others. Have you seen these new murals?

First seen in the Dela Rosa Walkway on April 22, these murals are filled with cracks and imperfections, all displayed in broad daylight. Some may just look at this in confusion, but frequent passersby will find that, come nighttime, these walls are more than what meets the eye.

In the dark of the night, they transform with golden hair-like threads filling up the cracks.

The new installation series is inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi. Kintsugi is the art of putting broken pieces of pottery back together with gold. This gives each piece a unique, irreplaceable strength and beauty. With its golden cracks, kintsugi pieces become an ode to healing and a testament that repairing things is not just a science but an art.

As Kintsugi Wellness author Candace Kumai has said, “Kintsugi reveals how to heal and shows you that you are better with your golden cracks.” The art form helps remind us that there is beauty in healing after difficult times.

If you’re in the area, make sure to walk by during the day and return at night to watch the walls take on their stronger, more beautiful form. Also, watch this space for a golden reveal coming this May. – Rappler.com
