MANILA, Philippines – Veteran Filipino comedian Evelyn Bontogon-Guerrero — also known as Matutina from the 1970s sitcom John en Marsha — died on Friday, February 14 at the age of 78.
Her grandson, Kirby Gementiza, confirmed her death to ABS-CBN News. According to her death certificate, Guerrero died due to acute respiratory failure. She had also been battling stage 5 chronic kidney disease and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
In a 2024 interview on Julius Babao’s vlog, Matutina discussed her health challenges, which included her decade-long battle with osteoporosis and ongoing dialysis treatments.
The pioneering comedian-actress was most known for her portrayal of Matutina, the loyal maid of Doña Delilah (played by the late Dely Atay-atayan). She was beloved for her distinctive squeaky voice.
John en Marsha, which aired from 1973 to 1990, also starred Dolphy and Nida Blanca. – Rappler.com
